Depression. It’s hard to explain.
Having depression is like being in a
David Lynch film.
Trying to explain it is like trying to explain
a David Lynch film.
Experiential
When you have depression, the world looks strange — it doesn’t look or feel right — which is why we set up a bunch of blue apples in a supermarket to:
A) Let those battling depression know that we understand the dissonance that takes such a toll on them.
B) Give those without depression a chance to empathize with the depression experience.
Depression leaves those suffering with a feeling of empty worthlessness. Like an empty vending machine, one is without meaning and has nothing left to give. But maybe if you’re kind, and give a dollar anyways, the gesture alone can fill it back up.
Social
Film is a medium that triumphs in its ability to show what is inexpressible with words.
Many films such as Mulholland Drive form a surreal portrait of Depression because it’s something best understood viscerally.
Depression Fest is a film festival that embraces depression head on. Though it might seem… depressing to some, it gives artists, film-goers, and those battling depression a community of people who understand its strange reality — opportunity to express the struggle with one another — opportunity to create and collaborate.
